Overview

VanBFF is an invite-only social networking app designed exclusively for the van life and nomadic community. It solves a real problem: dating and making friends while living on the road, where traditional apps don’t work because most matches are with people who live in houses.

Tagline:
"Stop swiping through people who live in houses."

Built for the RevenueCat Shipyard Hackathon for creator Quin Gable (@quingable).

Key Features
  • Swipe & Match - Find fellow nomads nearby for dating, friendship, or both
  • Rig Profiles - Showcase your van/vehicle build with details like solar, shower, kitchen setup
  • Travel Plans - Share where you’re headed so you can coordinate meetups
  • Activity-Based Matching - Connect over shared interests across 6 categories
  • Invite-Only System - Verified community with invite codes for safety
  • Scout the Cat - A sassy orange tabby adventure cat mascot guides the app experience

Authentication & Security
  • Email/password via Devise
  • Google & Apple OAuth sign-in
  • Phone verification via Twilio
  • Invite code + waitlist system
  • Rate limiting with Rack Attack

Technical Highlights
  • Rails 8.1.2 with all the new Solid adapters (Queue, Cache, Cable)
  • Hotwire (Turbo + Stimulus) for SPA-like interactivity without a JS framework
  • Hotwire Native for wrapping the app in a native iOS shell with native intercepts for paywalls and app icon switching
  • Comprehensive admin panel for user management, invite codes, waitlist, and verifications
